New Foliage Cultivars: Plan a Better Nursery Trial

A cultivar can be new to your customers without being newly discovered. The commercial opportunity lies in matching a defined plant with a realistic growing plan, a clear product specification and evidence from a nursery trial. Historical university releases offer useful methods for a contemporary trial, helping importers and growers separate research interest from the evidence needed for a repeat order.

Read university releases for the questions they answer

The UF/IFAS release for Pothos ‘Pearls and Jade’ reports a 12-week trial in four-inch containers, including plant dimensions and visual quality across fertilizer treatments. It is a historical cultivar example, not a new 2026 release. Its value here is the transparent connection between starting material, growing conditions, evaluation date and recorded outcome. [1]

The university’s tropical foliage breeding programme describes several routes to new material, including hybridization and selected variants. Its Spathiphyllum flowering guidance also highlights cultivar genetics, plant maturity and environmental factors. A research result becomes more useful when a buyer knows which production question it addresses. [2] [3]

Write the trial question before choosing the plants

An importer might want to assess how a selection complements an existing assortment. A nursery may need to know whether it can reach a target grading stage within the available production window. State that question first. Then choose the starting material, comparison group and evaluation dates that can answer it without changing too many variables at once.

Trial element An example of a useful record
Starting material Cultivar, lot, supply stage and date received.
Growing conditions Tray, substrate, irrigation and bench location.
Performance Establishment, new growth, uniformity and handling observations.
Commercial fit Labour, bench occupancy and plants meeting your grading standard.
Decision Repeat, adjust the process, extend observation or choose another selection.

Include a comparison you understand

Where practical, grow a familiar selection alongside the candidate using a comparable starting stage. This gives staff a reference for the conditions experienced during the trial. Record differences in initial material rather than assuming every comparison begins at the same point. Keep cultivar labels and photographs consistent so the final review can be traced back to the original plan.

Define the grading standard before the review. A clear decision might concern readiness for the next pot size, acceptable variation or the finished presentation expected by a particular customer. The result is stronger when the team evaluates the whole trial group using the same rule rather than choosing the most attractive plants for the final photographs.

Build a measured introduction with IWATER

Use IWATER’s catalogue to assemble a shortlist, then discuss actual batch availability, supply stage, quantity and delivery timing. Tell IWATER which production question the trial needs to answer. Request the information required for receiving and keep the quotation connected to the material offered.

After the trial, review the production observations and customer feedback separately. Good growth does not establish market demand, while early customer interest does not establish a reliable growing process. Together, those records can support a better decision about the next order. This is how research reading, supplier communication and nursery evidence can contribute to a more deliberate foliage assortment.
